UDOT moves all I-215 west-belt traffic to north side

SALT LAKE CITY — Drivers on the west belt of Interstate 215 saw a major change in traffic flow on Monday.

UDOT’s John Gleason said all traffic had been shifted onto the the northbound side of I-215 between state Route 201 to just north of I-80. 

The I-215 West Improved project is part of an ongoing effort by UDOT on I-215 between state Route 201 and North Temple in Salt Lake City, where the agency is reconstructing ramps and rehabilitating bridges.

In a press release, Gleason said the shift will “allow crews to focus their efforts on building the southbound side of I-215 more efficiently.”

“This shift is more than just a traffic change,” UDOT Project Manager John Montoya said. “It’s what allows us to move into the heart of construction. Crews can now focus all their efforts on rebuilding one side of the freeway so we can deliver smoother pavement and stronger bridges for drivers sooner.”

What drivers can expect

As is the case in any diverted traffic situation, drivers can expect narrowed lanes and traffic patterns that change throughout the period of construction.

Drivers should slow down, stay alert and follow posted signs, Gleason said.

“UDOT also encourages drivers to use the zipper merge whenever possible to keep traffic moving more smoothly and reduce backups near lane closures,” he said.
