When and where to go see fireflies in Utah

SALT LAKE CITY — Firefly season is back in Utah.
On the Natural History Museum of Utah’s website, Invertebrate Collections Manager Christy Bills said Utah fireflies are adults from late May to early July and only blink during that period after about 10 p.m.
She said most people are unaware of those fireflies because they don’t often hike or camp in marshy areas where they’re located.

While sightings are rare, they can be seen across the state.
“Dozens and dozens of populations. And so far, I think we’re up to 25 of the 29 counties (that) have verified populations,” Bills mentioned on the museum’s website.
The Natural History Museum of Utah wants people to report to them if they do see fireflies, so they can track where the populations are and study them for the Western Firefly Project.
