SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Highway Patrol has stopped just under 97,000 vehicles in the first four months of 2022.

That is according to the UHP’s bi-weekly statistics that were posted in a Facebook posting. Nearly 12,000 vehicles have been stopped since the UHP’s previous update in mid-April.

The UHP says that with an increase in wrong way drivers, it has created a task force focused on solving the issue.

To be considered a wrong way driver, according to the UHP, a vehicle must be established in the lane of a divided highway, rather than just crossing into the lane.

The UHP previous reported there have been 21 wrong way crashes so far this year. After making a correction, the UHP says there have been 12 wrong way crashes to date.

However, the UHP has stopped 55 wrong way drivers, with many of those among the 1,248 drivers stopped for driving under the influence so far this year.

Individuals driving at high rate of speed also continues to be a problem for the UHP.

So far in 2022, the Utah Highway Patrol has stopped 1,860 drivers for driving in excess of 100 mph. A total of 245 of those have come since UHP’s last statical update in the middle of April.

According to the UHP, there have been 17,609 crashes statewide with 87 fatalities. That’s a 2 percent increase from this time last year.
