SALT LAKE CITY — Police, emergency workers, and a hazmat team responded to Willard Elementary School in Box Elder County Wednesday after a package was opened and school officials noticed a “suspicious material” inside.
A comment from the school district on its Facebook page said the school had been expecting a package of bookmarks, but that there was a “substance” inside when they opened it.
“Willard Elementary received an expected package today,” the Box Elder School District said. “Upon opening the package, it was observed that a suspicious material was included. Local PD was immediately contacted.”
The school was placed on a hazmat lockdown, Willard City Police later said in a statement, until officials could determine the nature of the substance and whether it posed a threat.
Officials determined the substance was not a threat, but “a dietary supplement that was smashed in a package upon delivery,” police said in a statement.
Students had been contained in their classrooms, but were later released to their parents or guardians.
This is a developing story. It may be updated.
