Freeway reopens after wrong-way driver crashes, dies, on I-15

TREMONTON — A wrong-way driver on northbound Interstate 15 died on Tuesday after police said they crashed into another vehicle.
The wrong-way driver, a 77-year-old woman later identified as Janet Hawks, was in a gray Ford Focus, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety, and was driving southbound in the northbound lanes just north of exit 377 in Tremonton.

The DPS said another woman was driving a Toyota 4Runner in the northbound lanes and crashed head-on into the Ford Focus.
“Both vehicles went into the median up against the cable barrier. The 4 Runner rolled onto its side,” the DPS said in a statement.
According to a witness, the Focus driver may have “seen the Ford Focus make a U-turn to go southbound from the northbound on-ramp immediately before the collision.”
The Ford Focus driver died at the scene. The 4Runner driver was hospitalized with “critical but non-life-threatening injuries,” the DPS said.
The freeway was closed in Tremonton for about two hours and reopened around 2 p.m.
