SALT LAKE CITY — Demolition has begun at the site of a fire that prompted hundreds of evacuations in Sugar House more than two weeks ago.

Salt Lake City officials confirmed that phase one of demolition has begun at the site near 1040 E. 2220 South, where a six-story apartment complex under construction caught fire late Tuesday night, Oct. 25.

The city said that the heavy equipment required for demolition will keep the closed portion of Highland drive closed until next week.

Along with the demolition update, the Salt Lake City Department of Economic Development also provided information about road and business closures.

As of Thursday, Nov. 10:

  • Wilmington is open east of Highland Drive, and
  • Highland Drive is open south of Wilmington Ave.

As for businesses affected by the Sugar House fire, the Salt Lake City DEC said that all businesses east of Highland Drive can remain open. But a third-party structural engineer said Buffalo Wild Wings, Cubby’s and Cold Stone must remain closed.

Businesses on Elm Street, which include SLC Med Spa, SportsClips, Mochinut, and Real Advantage are still closed because of glass that the DEC describes as “actively falling onto the sidewalk.”

Hundreds of people were evacuated from nearby apartments on the night the fire began. There were no injuries.
