Roads closed, some apts. off-limits, demolition set after Sugar House fire

SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City fire officials are letting some residents back into their buildings following the Sugar House fire that started late Tuesday night. Some units will not be accessible until crews finish working on the scene of the destroyed construction site.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department, SLCFD said it would use its webpage as a landing site for any updates on Sugar House fire.

The fire department said demolition crews would be on the scene starting around 5 p.m. on Wednesday night and that demolition work will last throughout the night.

Officials advised that traffic patterns and some residents would continue to be affected as crews work on cleanup after the Sugar House fire.

The fire department is allowing residents of Sugarmont Apartments and VUE Apartments back into their homes, with some exceptions. Residents of units listed on the fire department’s website cannot enter their homes until crews have finished firefighting and demolition efforts.

As for streets, the SLCFD said that the following are closed:

• Highland Drive from 2120 South Wilmington
• Wilmington and Elm Avenues from McClelland to Highland Drive
• McClelland from 2100 South to Sugarmont Drive

Continuing shelter for evacuees

Those residents who have been evacuated and are not yet able to return to their homes may stay at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, at 2005 South 900 East. This site has replaced the site initially provided at the Forest Dale Community Center.  Please call 800-733-2767 for more information.

Some residents have reported finding fire debris on their property. SLCFD asks that any such debris be handled with care by wearing an N95 (or better) mask and gloves. They also recommend that residents soak any fire debris with water to ensure it no longer poses a fire danger.
