HOUSING + HOMELESSNESS
South Jordan could see new housing development

SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — South Jordan may be getting a new housing community in the next several years.
The same company that developed Daybreak just announced its announced its plans to annex 2,200 acres to develop another community in South Jordan.
Rio Tinto Kennecott is asking South Jordan land to used to create a residential community. The company says this is in hopes to help address the increasing population and housing issues in Utah.
The potential development of the land is still in its early stages. The annexation process will take place over the next few months.
Once that is completed, Kennecott will start on its planning, then begin developing the land over the next several years.
Kennecott had dedicated a page to questions about the annexation that you can read here.
The company is also asking Herriman City to annex 25 acres. Here’s a map Kennecott has of all the potentially affected areas.

Historically, the land has been used for mining by Kennecott. The company says it has performed the proper tests to ensure the land is safe to build and live on should it be developed.
The safety and well-being of current and future community members is a top priority for Kennecott. Before deciding to annex this property, several environmental and regulatory studies were completed, indicating this area is safe for future development. Throughout the planning and development process, Kennecott will ensure that this site is safe and provides an ecological benefit to the residents and wildlife.
