SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Gov. Spencer Cox issued a declaration on Thursday that Sunday, July 2 be a day of prayer and thanksgiving in the Beehive State.
In the declaration, he’s asking religious leaders and all Utahns in general to offer a prayer of thanks for the historic snowfall the state received this past winter.
Various parts of the state have encountered drought conditions almost every year since 2000. In the last two years, the state has experienced “extreme” and “exceptional” drought conditions, according to a news release from the Office of the Governor.
Previously, the governor has asked Utahns to come together in prayer for divine assistance in helping with the state’s drought.
“I believe prayer can be a powerful tool,” Cox said in a news release. “There is real power in people of all different faiths and backgrounds uniting together and pleading for help from a higher authority than our own. I also believe that people who pray for water will conserve water, and we need to continue to conserve.”
In addition to prayer, Utahns also did their part through actions. According to the release, residents have conserved tens of billions of gallons of water over the past few years. Additionally, the Great Salt Lake is up more than 5 feet and Lake Powell has risen more than 60 feet.
