LOGAN, Utah — Former Utah State University football player Patrick Maddox is settling his lawsuit against the university. He will receive $150,000 in the settlement.
He filed the lawsuit after he said he was retaliated against by his teammates following his release of a video of former USU police chief Earl Morris saying that sometimes girls from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have sex with football players and then regret it. Then, they tell their bishops it was not consensual.
The video was taken during a meeting between the team’s coach, Blake Anderson, Former Utah State University Chief of Police Earl Morris and the players on the football team.
The video got a lot of attention online. Morris resigned following the release of the video.
Maddox, the former USU football player, claimed in his lawsuit that Anderson did not protect him from the retaliation he was facing.
The university said in a statement that it disputes Maddox’s claims. It said that coaches are trained on how to address sexual misconduct and avoid victim-blaming language.
Utah State University’s statement said they hope to move forward after the lawsuit.
