SPANISH FORK, Utah — A woman hitchhiking from Colorado was arrested Monday for allegedly stabbing her driver at a rest stop in Spanish Fork on Monday.
According to Sgt. Spencer Cannon, of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, the woman was hitchhiking in the area of Fruita, Colorado when a vehicle stopped to give her a ride.
Cannon says she told the driver she was trying to get to Grand Junction, Colorado. However, she provided the driver with a Salt Lake City address.
“Those are obviously opposite directions,” Cannon said in a message to KSL. “And it’s unclear why they continued in the direction of Salt Lake until they got to the Tie Fork rest area.”
At the rest stop in Spanish Fork, authorities say the woman allegedly stabbed the man in the back of the neck, behind the ear.
At the last report, Cannon said the man was in good condition, but also said, “It easily could have ended worse.”
The weapon used was not a knife, according to Cannon. Rather, it was some other implement.
Cannon says mental health issues may have been a factor in the incident.
The woman, whose identity has not been released, was taken into custody and booked into the Utah County Jail.
Cannon says the man was on his way to Tooele County.
