SLCPD arrests three suspects in Sunday morning shooting investigation

SALT LAKE CITY — A Salt Lake City Police Department investigation resulted in the arrest of three individuals involved in a shooting early Sunday morning.
The investigation began at approximately 12:17 a.m. on Oct 1. According to a press release, a community member called 911 to report a shooting at Westpoint Park.
Upon the officer’s arrival, they found a 21-year-old man had been shot in the arm. Following this, an officer applied a tourniquet to the victim’s arm. Paramedics then transported him to an area hospital with a minor injury.
Through its investigation, the SCLPD Gang Unit learned that the victim had gone to the park to engage in a fight. Allegedly, three other individuals, Yonathan Hernandez-Aguila, 21, Abdiaziz Ibrahim, 20, and Luis Leal-Vergara, 19, also went to the park to fight. It was Hernandez-Aguila who allegedly shot the victim, according to the press release. The three suspects fled in a car before authorities arrived on the scene.
Officers were able to track them down, finding them in Kearns, Utah, and then arresting them.
According to the press release, Hernandez-Aguila has been booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of aggravated assault, felony discharge of a firearm and riot. Ibrahim and Leal-Vergara were booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on charges of felony riot.
The investigation is ongoing.
