Editor’s note: This is an editorial piece. An editorial, like a news article, is based on fact but also shares opinions. The opinions expressed here are solely those of the author and are not associated with our newsroom.

I saw her mother-in-law once — from about 30 feet away. But I have no connection to Princess Kate. A young woman who found her prince in the best tradition of Disney, living an idyllic life at every turn — from the castles to the chauffeurs to the clothing. Beautiful children with nannies, housekeepers, chefs and butlers.

It’s a life we can’t relate to. And as Americans we filter our princesses through the cinematic lens of Disney. Each of them —whether Snow White, Cinderella, Rapunzel… or the rest faced some sort of challenge, trial, or tribulation… before earning happiness ever after.

So after the lunchtime news that Princess Kate, the future Queen of England has cancer, many hearts skipped a beat. If only because a young mother of three is facing a challenge like no other.

No Disney Princess has ever faced cancer, abdominal surgery, and chemotherapy. Just like that her near-perfect life has been shattered and as she sought solitude, as she sought time to process her fears, she had us. People with an internet connection and a bottomless need for the gossip that should leave a thousand reporters writers and commentators apologizing for their harsh words and churlish talk of affairs, butt lifts, and breakdowns.

We’ll be listening for a thousand apologies.  But all we’ll likely hear from the many offenders will be bland promises of thoughts and prayers.
