SALT LAKE CITY — When we studied Shakespeare in high school — well when we were supposed to read Shakespeare and nobody did — our English teacher tried to get us interested with a discussion of the quote, “Absence makes the heart grow fonder.” He argued that absence actually makes the heart grow weaker.
Turns out, the quote isn’t even from Shakespeare, but I owe that 11th-grade teacher my marriage. When I met my Utah girl, I flew here every week because I didn’t want the heart to grow weaker. And look, we’ve been married for a dozen years.
Yes, some people manage long-distance relationships. In fact, 3,000 of them were asked by DatingAdvice.com: if you had to, would you move to your lover’s city?
People in long-distance relationships with someone in San Francisco said ‘yep, I sure would move.’ It’s the number one destination on the list. And Salt Lake City? Let’s see… number 99 on the list?
Apparently, a lot of long distance partners would rather break up than move here. They probably don’t realize we have a hockey team now. It’s the only reason I could think that someone in love would spurn these beautiful mountains, this majestic place, in order to stay put somewhere else, break up and start all over.
When it comes to Salt Lake City, which we love so much, it’s true Mr. Maestro. (My 11th-grade English teacher.) You were right. When it comes to Salt Lake, absence makes the heart grow weaker. But man that hockey team is gonna be awesome.
