SALT LAKE CITY –Everybody jokes about the Rolling Stones. For goodness sake, their tour is sponsored by AARP. Not a joke. But even older than Mick Jagger is Tom Jones, heading off on a concert tour.
If you’ve never thrown him your underwear, Tom Jones got his big break on the Ed Sullivan show. A handsome pub singer in Wales, he crushed that TV appearance. Hips swaying like Elvis, he belted out what became a signature song:
Tom Jones had a string of hits. He sold 100 million records. And he continued singing into his 40’s. Around age 50, he had a minor hit covering Prince.
This guy. When he started singing you could almost hear him sweat.
Dude still gives it everything.
Well into his 70’s, he was a judge on the British version of The Voice, often breaking into song just because.
And now, at age 84, the hair’s white, the dance moves slower. But the ladies still swoon, the underwear flies at the stage and at this stage of life, when most people his age are long since retired, Tom Jones opens his world tour tonight.
