SALT LAKE CITY — The Salt Lake City Fire Department is investigating after two fires broke out at the same unoccupied apartment building within a few hours of each other.
Crews were first called to the unoccupied Chateau Normandie at the corner of 100 S. and 400 E. Thursday afternoon because of reports of smoke coming from the windows.
SLCFD Fire Captain Christopher Burk said they were called back just after midnight on Friday.
“We got reports of smoke and flames. [When] Crews showed up, we had significant smoke and flames. We’ve been fighting a defensive fire since there since then. No civilian injuries. No firefighter injuries and we will be on scene…watching.”
He said because the building was not occupied and wasn’t safe, they decided to pull their crews out and fight the fire using a defensive attack.
That means crews fight the fire from outside the building to make sure it doesn’t spread to other buildings.
Right now, they’re monitoring the building to make sure it doesn’t catch fire again.
When crews showed up to fight the fire on Thursday, they did find one person in the building and took him to the hospital with minor injuries.
A spokesperson for Salt Lake City Fire Department said both fires at the apartment complex are under investigation.
