SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City recently launched two new programs to help struggling renters. One of those programs is the Tenant Resource Center.
Ruedigar Matthes, policy manager for Salt Lake City’s Community and Neighborhoods department, said the Tenant Resource Center aims to help expedite the process of navigating housing resources.
“They’re not all in one place. Having somebody who can help you connect with those resources, especially when you’re in a moment of crisis, can be life-altering,” Matthes told Dave & Dujanovic.
One of the features on the program’s website is an option to file a complaint if you have any concerns with a landlord. According to Matthes, this will connect you with a mediator who can help you come up with a solution.
There is also an option to request an inspection for poor or unsafe housing units, which does not require permission from a landlord.
“One of the nice things is that if a tenant requests an inspection, that is just [between] them and the inspector who comes to visit,” Matthes said. “So the landlord doesn’t have to know about it unless something is dangerous or if they’re not up to standards. Then at that point, they would get a citation issued of non-compliance.”
