Man shot by police, expected to survive

MIDVALE — A man who was shot by a police officer in a Midvale parking lot early Wednesday is expected to survive.
Unified Police say the 26-year-old man, who has not been identified, was acting erratically and suspiciously in the parking lot of a McDonald’s, east of I-15 on 7200 South. It was 1:30 a.m., and the restaurant was closed, facts that Sgt. Melody Gray says would have raised concern even without strange behavior.
“So, anytime anybody’s wandering around at night in a closed business parking lot, just that behavior in and of itself would invoke suspicion in a police officer,” Gray says.
Gray says it escalated into a fight, and then the man displayed what appeared to be some kind of weapon.
“A scuffle ensued between our subject and the officer,” Gray says.
The item turned out to be a screwdriver.
The man was taken to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray for treatment.
As is routine in officer-involved shooting investigations, another department will take over the investigation.
