Salt Lake City Council wants resident input on 2020-2021 fiscal budget

SALT LAKE CITY– The Salt Lake City Council wants the input of Salt Lake City residents to help set the 2020-2021 fiscal budget.
The Salt Lake City Council’s budget discussions begin on Tuesday, May 5th. Due to the pandemic and aftermath of the earthquake, the Council is seeking public input on new needs that should be included in the annual budget this year.
In a statement released on Monday, the Council stressed the importance of public opinion. “The City budget is one of the Council’s strongest policy-making tools and one of the most important opportunities for public input,” said the Council.
Citizen input is needed. Social distancing doesn’t stop democracy.”
By late June, the City will have adopted funding for the City’s perpetual needs, including the Redevelopment Agency, the Local Building Authority, and budgets for the SLC Library, SLC International Airport, and Public Utilities.
Meeting times and how to provide input
Until the pandemic subsides, all city council meetings will be conducted virtually. Any resident can live stream or call into the meeting to participate.
City Council meetings will take place every Tuesday at 7 p.m. A final vote on the budget will take place in mid-to-late June. The Council will meet weekly to “discuss and fine-tune the budget for the upcoming fiscal year,” according to the statement.
The fiscal year runs from July to June.

The Salt Lake City Council is holding a Public Hearing on May 19 and June 2 to hear community opinion regarding the budget.
