PRICE, Utah — Six Carbon High School teachers are in quarantine for the next two weeks after one tested positive for COVID-19 during the first week of school. These teachers will be able to continue with class instruction remotely, returning to school Sept. 1.

The teacher who tested positive did not come to school in-person on the first day of school, which was Wednesday, so no students were exposed to the virus. It’s not clear whether the teachers who were exposed came into contact with any students during the first week.

“We’re excited that the teacher in question really listened to what we were trying to say about, ‘Don’t come in if you’re sick,'” said Lance Hatch, superintendent of Carbon High School. “Because of that, we’re in a lot better position now.”

Hatch said the teachers who will work remotely will be assisted by teacher aides who will be in the classroom with students. The teachers can return after a 14-day quarantine if they don’t develop symptoms.

“Through technology, they’ll be able to see their students in the classroom,” Hatch said. “The students will be able to see them and hear them and they’ll be able to continue helping their students […] with the help of a substitute, an aide, that will be in the classroom physically.”

The Carbon School District also has COVID-19 plans in place for a 14-day shutdown of schools if necessary — equipping students with the technology and supplies needed to continue work.
