(Friday, Sept. 18)

Police say a man who fired on officers during a foot chase in Midvale was killed.

Unified Police spokesperson Melody Cutler said it began at a Motel 6 in Midvale on the west side of the freeway where officers found a suspect they had been looking for for some time.

Despite having his car spiked by police, the suspect and two passengers drove about nine blocks west before he and the other occupants exited the vehicle at 7200 South and Bingham Junction Blvd.

The suspect and a female passenger ran south and were quickly caught by police and have been taken into custody.

A 22-year-old man, the other passenger in the car, took off in another direction and opened fire on police as they pursued him. Police returned fire and he was killed.

Police are waiting to contact the next of kin before the name of the deceased suspect will be released.
