Bad crash in Lehi during Thursday rush hour leaves one child critical

LEHI, Utah — A large crash on I-15 in Lehi had a portion of the freeway closed on Thursday and critically injured a child.
Lt. Nick Street with the Utah Highway Patrol said a Kia Soulwith three people inside struck the middle barrier on one side of the freeway before crossing all the lanes of traffic and hitting the other barrier.
SB I-15 at Lehi Main St. is currently shut down due to a critical injury crash. Single vehicle into the wall with three occupants. One child passenger in critical condition transported by air ambulance. The driver and passenger taken in fair/stable condition by ground ambulance.

“The car drove out of lanes of travel, hit the barrier wall on the left side of the interstate, then went across, managing not to hit any other vehicles, and hit the barrier wall on the other side of the interstate there at Lehi/Main Street, into the top of the off-ramp portion,” Street said.
A child was transported by medical helicopter in critical condition following the crash. Street says it was touch-and-go for a while when emergency responders were unable to find a pulse on the child initially.
“From what I understand, some nurses and also the UDOT Incident Management worker was able to regain a pulse while a helicopter was en route, they were able then to get the victim on to the helicopter and taken to a local area hospital in critical condition,” Street said.

Lt. Street says one of the other occupants of the Kia was an 8-year-old twin. Names of those involved in the Kia were not immediately released. One passenger has a hematoma, according to investigators.
Southbound I-15 was closed for about an hour-and-a-half, causing big back-ups from Draper to Lehi Thursday night. The road was reopened around 7:21 p.m., but UDOT said significant residual delays remained through about 8 p.m.
