SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — A former Utah gubernatorial candidate is calling for policy changes within the Salt Lake County Republican Party.

Time for changes?

Aimee Winder Newton, a current Salt Lake County Council member, says the county party continues to lag behind the state GOP when it comes to addressing specific issues.

“Anything ranging from a sexual harassment policy to even how can the executive committee better hold a chair accountable that has gone rogue,” she said Wednesday morning while joining Dave & Dujanovic. “Overall, the other issue is, we just need to make sure that we’ve got good people that we’ve elected.”

Her comments come following the resignation of former Salt Lake County GOP Chairman Scott Miller. He stepped down following claims of bullying and harassment within the party, which he eventually downplayed in an email that disparaged the women voicing their concerns.

After stepping down, Miller has indicated that he still plans on running for the chairman position with the state GOP.

In a recent video posted on Twitter, Winder Newton addressed that news. She at one point said she would be “shocked” if he ends up with the position.

Winder Newton says ethics committee isn’t enough

Since the resignation of Miller, the Salt Lake County Republican Party and their executive committee have announced the formation of a new ethics committee.

Winder Newton calls the move a good first step, although it certainly shouldn’t be the last.

“There are some policy and bylaw changes that I believe need to happen with the county party,” she explained. “I know the executive committee has been making a list of things that they think need to be addressed specifically in either by law or policy.”
