SALT LAKE CITY — The campaign behind Burgess Owens’ run for Congress is being fined for not disclosing some donations on time.

An FEC filing says the “Burgess 4 Utah” campaign failed to report 20 last-minute contributions, totaling nearly $34,000. Law requires any donation of $1,000 or more be disclosed within 48 hours, if it’s made within 20 days of an election. Eight of the contributions in question came through the House Freedom Fund.

Owens and his treasurer, Paul Kilgore, are being fined close to $4,000.

Following his telltale pattern of recklessness when it comes to campaign finance, Burgess Owens has again shown his belief that he doesn’t have to follow the same rules as everyone else,” said Utah Democratic Party Chair Jeff Merchant. “While everyday Utahns work hard to put food on the table for their families, Representative Owens skirts the law and expects to face no consequences for his actions. If Burgess Owens can’t be truthful when running his own campaign, he can’t be expected to work effectively for the interests of Utahns.”

KSL reached out to Congressman Owens’ campaign for comment and has yet to hear back.

The campaign was being eyed by the FEC mid-summer of 2020. The New York Times reported the campaign accepted $135,000 in illegal contributions.
