City officials: No mercury contamination at Fairmont Park Pond

SAT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City mayor Erin Mendenhall announced Saturday that testing done by both the city and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) show no signs of mercury contamination in the Fairmont Park Pond.
The EPA performed a second test over the weekend. The results from that test should be available on Sunday.
Mendenhall expects the pond to reopen Monday.
The pond was closed on Wednesday, Sept. 8 after a possible discovery of mercury in the pond.
Salt Lake Emergency Management sent out a notice last Wednesday, asking residents to avoid the park until further notice.
According to health officials, water from the pond is not used for drinking nor is it used for irrigation purposes.
