ST. GEORGE, Utah — One person died Wednesday morning following an auto-pedestrian collision in St. George, police said.

According to police, the auto-pedestrian collision occurred in the area of 1300 W. Sunset Blvd at 6:47 a.m.

When emergency personnel arrived on scene, the driver of the vehicle, a 23-year-old male, was on scene and cooperating with authorities. The victim, a male in his 60s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Through the investigation by the St. George Police Department, authorities believe the victim was crossing Sunset Boulevard southbound from the corner of 1300 West. Police say that he was in an unmarked crosswalk when he was hit by a four-door sedan, traveling eastbound.

The driver, Melvin Garcia Gomez, was interviewed by police, and taken into custody for investigation of automobile homicide; failure to yield to a pedestrian and no driver’s license. Police say the automobile homicide charge, a third-degree felony, is directly connected to the results of a DUI investigation.

The name of the victim has not been identified.
