High gas prices, fireworks and travel: Looking ahead to Pioneer Day

SALT LAKE CITY — The Pioneer Day holiday weekend is approaching, and celebrations will happen amid high gas prices, firework restrictions and hot temperatures.

Utah’s average gas price fell below $5 Thursday morning, at $4.98. A heat advisory for parts of southern Utah is in place from the National Weather Service. And several cities have fireworks restrictions in place. So what will celebrations look like this year?

For Gov. Spencer Cox, celebrations won’t include fireworks at home. He told KUTV Wednesday that he’d be skipping personal fireworks this year and encouraged his fellow Utahns to do the same.
