SALT LAKE CITY — Hilton Salt Lake City Center has placed several beehives on their rooftop for sustainability efforts and ecosystem strengthening.

The beehive state lives up to its name with hard work and honey production. Hilton created the “Honey with Purpose” program in an attempt to live up to the state’s core values.

According to a press release from Hilton, in Salt Lake, the 40,000 bees they have on their rooftop have produced 15 gallons of raw honey this year alone.

Launched in 2019, the beehive setup was made possible by local partnering with Bees Brothers and an urban gardener from Grow Brighter Gardens.

“The aim of Hilton’s ‘Travel with Purpose’ initiative is to create memories while having a positive impact on the environment”, explained Hilton Salt Lake City Center’s General Manager, Garrett Parker in a press release.

“We could base our sustainability measures on energy efficiency alone, but we wanted to do something more unique. That’s what inspired us to implement the beehives, which also represent our local community since Utah is the beehive state.”

The rooftop beehives also create a discussion about the importance of saving bees as their pollination drives the ecosystem. With climate change affecting the population, human-maintained hives are becoming increasingly important.
