KAMAS CITY, Utah — If you’re in the Kamas City area and see fire or smoke, don’t be alarmed. Fire crews ignited piles in the Left-hand Canyon, located three miles northwest of Kamas on Mirror Lake Highways SR 150.

The piles burning are composed of cut vegetation to prevent wildfires, according to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management

Pile burning typically takes place during the wet season, after the vegetation has dried out, to reduce damage to nearby trees and lessen the amount of smoke caused by the burning.

Fire safety tips

The Utah Fire Information webpage offers advice on how to prevent fires in the first place.

First, notify your local fire department before lighting stubble or burning debris.

Second, make sure you’re aware of local conditions in your area. Are there red flag warnings posted?

Third, have a plan if things get out of control.

Lastly, before leaving your fire site, make sure it’s out cold.
