MOUNTAIN GREEN, Utah — A pilot of a small plane survived a crash near Durst Mountain on Sunday afternoon.  After the accident, the pilot hiked close to six miles for help.

According to a Facebook post from Mountain Green Fire Protection District, the crash happened near Durst Mountain which is several miles up Cottonwood Canyon Road. The pilot hiked for two hours until cell service was available.

The Fire Chief of Mountain Green Fire Brian Brendel, told KSL NewsRadio that crews were dispatched in the 4 o’clock hour.

“The pilot had taken off for Idaho and crashed somewhere northeast of the Morgan Airport which is in Mountain Green,” said Brendel.

Weber-Morgan dispatch triangulated the location of the plane.

“Normally with these situations we have a great deal of difficulty locating the  plane or the people,” said Brendel.

Mountain Green Fire and Morgan Fire & EMS and Morgan Sheriff’s Deputies responded to the scene. According to the post, access to the site was difficult and was reached mostly by ATV roads.

“In this case, he just kind of got out of the plane and dusted himself off and walked himself down this ATV road.”

Upon locating the crash site, “Mountain Green firefighters assessed the wreckage, disabled the batteries and addressed the fuel leak,” the post stated.

No injuries were reported. The cause of the crash has not been released. The plane is said to be a total loss.
