INDIANOLA, Utah – Indianola fire crews responded to a fire in Black Hawk Mountains Estates at approximately 6:20 p.m. on Monday, June 26. Fire crews saw the fire before their pagers alerted them. They arrived at the scene within five minutes of the page. Within 15 minutes, six volunteer firefighters and three trucks also arrived.

Officials say the property owner caused the fire by burning trash in a burn barrel with a screen. Embers floated downhill and caused two separate fires to ignite. One came very close to gas cans sitting near an RV.

Officials immediately cited the property owner for burning on the scene.

Contact fire department for burning permit

Since there are many fuels this year, officials state it is important to practice proper fire safety protocols. Before burning, citizens must contact their local fire warden and obtain a burning permit. The Indianola Valley Fire Department states there will be no warnings given to those who cause a fire.

Officials say those who are caught burning or who cause a fire will be cited immediately.

Fire safety reminders from Indianola Valley Fire

As the fire season begins, the Indianola Valley Fire Department has a few fire safety reminders for Utah residents:

  • Create a defensible space, clearing out dry brush and tall grass. This will make it easier for crews to put out a fire.
  • Do not burn.
  • If there is a fire, call 911 immediately. Do not call a firefighter.
  • Do not approach the scene of a fire. Interfering with emergency vehicles is a citable offense.
