SALT LAKE CITY — Firefighters have now contained the East Canyon and Range fires that started on Aug. 17 and 18 respectively.

Fire officials said the East Canyon fire began at the north end of East Canyon Reservoir in Morgan County. The fire was caused by a lightning strike and no structures were threatened as crews fought the flames. The fire reached a total of 30 acres before it was contained.

The Range fire was another lightning-caused wildfire burning east of Price City in the Tavaputs Mountain Range. At its final update, the fire had grown to 129 acres and was contained through the work of 18 smokejumpers and a state helicopter. Firefighters began mopping up any remaining hot spots on Friday.

Still burning, however, is the Thompson Ridge fire. The fire has been active for over two weeks now, but firefighters have made leaps of progress in the last week. Fire officials reported it as 0% contained Aug. 13 and it has since reached 60% containment. They said the current weather poses little threat to the fire perimeter as crews tackle the remaining uncontained portions of the fire’s border.
