SALT LAKE CITY — Upland hunting season begins next month. That means Utahns will be able to hunt animals like doves, pigeons, grouse and rabbits in higher mountain areas.

Faith Heaton Jolley of the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources said preparation is key to a good hunt.

“So just make sure you’re doing the research before you hit the field so that you can have a safe and successful hunt,” she said.

According to a DWR press release, anyone with a valid Utah hunting license can participate in upland hunting without any additional permits.

Hunters looking for an extra challenge can participate in the Upland Game Slam. According to the press release, the slam “encourages hunters to harvest a variety of upland game species, while generating money to help fund a variety of habitat and upland game-related projects.”

To complete a slam, hunters must harvest the required amount of the target species, the press release reads. There are a total of eight different slams. The entry fee for a slam is $20 for hunters 18 and older and $10 for 17 and younger. Learn more about regulations for hunting each species  check the 2023-24 Upland Game and Turkey Guidebook.

The upland hunting season starts Sept. 1 and runs through October for most animals.
