SALT LAKE CITY — Be on the lookout this week for alerts to your devices from the National Weather Service for snow squalls.

According to National Weather Service Meteorologist Christine Kruse, alerts will include information about the location and how long the warning is in effect.

“It’s a dangerous situation if you’re driving through near zero visibility, strong winds can get that flash freeze. So, I think it’s been a really good way for us to get that information to people that are in their cars,” said Kruse.

The warnings began through the emergency alert system in late 2021 in hopes of helping people plan their travel through a potentially dangerous snow squall.

What is a snow squall?

According to the NWS, snow squalls arrive quickly and typically last less than an hour. Temperatures drop quickly creating white-out conditions and icy roads.

Since the storms usually come in quickly, unprepared drivers can get caught in the storms.

The NWS advises delayed travel if a snow squall warning is issued for your area. Additionally, NWS advises traveling with emergency kits.
