PARK CITY, Utah — Last year, recreation workers in Park City cooked up new ideas amidst a record-breaking winter.

An idea was born to invite the community to race homemade cardboard sleds.

A course was built at the city’s Ice Hill Arena, and a date was set for the first-ever Park City cardboard sled derby.

Park City Recreation Coordinator Lauren Wall said people quickly jumped on board.

“We had 56 teams sign up,” she said while remembering the creative sleds that showed up.

“They made a safari jeep, and they all came dressed in different animal onesies,” she recalled. “We had the Mystery Mobile from Scooby Doo, and we had a big Viking ship. It was really impressive to see what people came up with, and of course, they had the costumes to match whatever theme the sled was.”

Some sleds did tumble on the way down, but the atmosphere was contagious.

“My favorite part was watching them come down the hill. The kids were just so excited,” Wall said.

People chose having a good time over placing on the proverbial podium.

This year, there are prizes. However, it sounds like good times are still going to win people over instead.

Park City’s second-annual cardboard sled derby happens this Saturday at the Park City Sports Complex.
