SALT LAKE CITY — The warmer-than-usual weather Utah had last week was only temporary. This week, a cold front is moving in, bringing valley rain and some snow to the mountains.
KSL Meteorologist Matt Johnson said winds will pick up Monday afternoon.
“You’ll notice winds pick up this afternoon, gusting 15 to 25 (mph), but we could even see some peak gust, up to 35 along the Wasatch Front. Strongest winds will show up by this afternoon.”
The cold front will work its way in during the commute hours of 5 p.m., 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. Johnson said it will bring some showers and potentially some thunder. Then, that rain will switch over to snow after midnight.
“But we’re not expecting a ton. Ground temperatures are still warm, so we could see maybe a trace to an inch on the grass. But that is something to pay attention to for the Tuesday morning commute. Morning commuters tomorrow morning could see some snowflakes.”
STORM TONIGHT – TUESDAY: Winds will be gusting out of the south this afternoon 25-35 MPH. Then tonight’s cold front should move in around 5-8pm.

How much snow to expect from the cold front
According to Johnson, the northern and central mountains could get about 6 to 12 inches of snow from this storm. And the Cottonwoods? Anywhere between 10 to 20 inches.
“Valley floor, I’ve got about a trace to 2 inches possible, but a lot of that’s going to be on the grass. And then the benches, 1 to 4 inches. So not a big storm in the way of snow for the valley, but the mountain tops, you know, if we do well with this, maybe the ski resorts (will) think twice about closing.”
Johnson said the rain and snow should stop after Tuesday morning. He also said there’s a chance for lake effect snow.
“I think we’ll see a window of some good snow showers as we head through the morning commute. I’d say (between) 6 a.m. and 9 a.m., maybe a little break and then another mid-morning push. And then more scattered in the afternoon. So mainly a morning deal with that and then it’s a lot more scattered.”
