SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah has confirmed the death of 22-year-old Drew Youngquist. He was reportedly working as a guide at Perisher Ski Resort in Australia, when he died after hitting a padded pole.

Local news outlets report he died on the scene, despite efforts from first responders.

Youngquist was working at the resort for the winter season and according to his LinkedIn profile, was taking part in an outdoor education program called Action Learning Initiatives.

The winter season in Australia stretches from June to October, with the peak time for skiing in July and August.

Dean for the College of Health Kelly Tappenden broke the news to students and staff by sending an email Wednesday afternoon.

“Drew was known for his adventurous spirit, love of the outdoors, and enthusiasm for life. He was an engaged and valued member of our school community, and his loss will be deeply felt by those who knew him. Drew’s absence leaves a void in our hearts,” Tappenden said.

He was reportedly a pre-med student hoping to graduate with his Bachelor of Science in Emergency Medical Services, along with an emphasis in Wilderness Technical Rescue. He was reportedly an experienced skier and worked as a guide for Utah Olympic Park.

“Here in the College of Health, we care deeply about each of our students – their well-being is at the forefront of our minds,” Tappenden said. “Drew’s passing is a reminder of the preciousness of life and the importance of cherishing each moment we have together. With the new academic year before us, let’s honor Drew as we learn and practice within this community of health professionals for which he was a key member.”

AIL director Nathan Brown spoke to the Daily Telegraph after the news broke.

“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Drew yesterday. He was a much-loved member of our team at ALI. He was a warm and loving young man full of energy and passion for the outdoors. We will miss him, and our thoughts are with his family in Utah during this tragic time.”
