Salt Lake City — When it comes to growing herbs in Utah’s high temperatures, rosemary is one of the most hardy herbs culinarians can count on to flourish in the heat.

KSL Greenhouse Show hosts Maria Shilaos and Taun Beddes shared facts about the herb and tips on how to grow rosemary in Utah.

KSL NewsRadio edited the following transcript for brevity.

A hardy herb in the heat

BEDDES: “Rosemary is one that’s a favorite of a lot of people culinarily. And, it is one that we have been drooling over for years that we wish we could grow in northern Utah and it has been, historically, pretty challenging because it’s not super cold hardy.”

SHILAOS: “So, Rosemary is one of the few herbs I use the most because I use it for presents, I put little sprigs on things when I give them to people, I love to give it away, I love to cook with it and I love to smell it so I’ll just bring some sprigs into the house.”

BEDDES: “One variety of rosemary is Arp and another is called madeline hill. Rosemary is a survivor. It grows in pretty poor soil. It will survive on being watered every couple of weeks and be perfectly happy, it’s super heat tolerant, it’s a really rugged and durable plant as far as care.”

SHILAOS: “Yeah, once it’s established, it grows like crazy…”
