SALT LAKE CITY — Grammy-nominated musician Caleb Chapman, named the “Best Educator” in Utah in 2016 by the Utah Best of State awards, is now taking on a new project — The People’s Music Hall of Fame, which will be permanently based in Utah.

Chapman is teaming with Adam Reader, aka the Professor of Rock, for the inaugural event on Friday, Feb. 7 at the Eccles Theater in downtown Salt Lake City, where musician Huey Lewis is being inducted in person.

“Traditional awards shows are historically driven by critics or other artists. With the People’s Music Hall of Fame, we are giving the public a voice and a vote for their favorite artists,” Chapman said.

The goal, Chapman said, is to have a physical museum and venue within the next seven years which will draw tourists from across the country and offer educational programs and exhibits for the public.

“The state-of-the-art facility will host concerts by both legends and future legends along with live events with Adam Reader.”

Reader told the Money Making Sense podcast there are so many musicians like Lewis who are fan favorites across several generations but haven’t been nominated for one of the Music Halls of Fame.

People’s Music Hall of Fame event will also fundraise

“Along with inducting Huey Lewis, this event will raise money for the Caleb Chapman Soundhouse in American Fork,” Reader said.

The school, founded in 1998, trains young musicians of all ability levels, including the founding members of Imagine Dragons.

It also provides performance and touring opportunities, as well as working side-by-side with celebrity musicians.

Reader said what makes Chapman and the Soundhouse program different, is that it is very “unique.”

Chapman “teaches students to ‘look up from their shoes’ while performing, which they can use as confidence in other areas of their lives.”

The induction ceremony and fundraiser at the Eccles will showcase the music of Lewis, performed by more than 200 award-winning students of the Soundhouse and special guest Tyler Glenn of Neon Trees.

The goal is to raise money for scholarships for more kids to attend the after-school program. Tickets are $20 each and there will be a silent auction as well.
