Amazon Prime Day is here; how to protect yourself from scams

SALT LAKE CITY — Amazon Prime Day is here, which means a lot of deals and a lot of scams. The Better Business Bureau said you can avoid falling victim to a scam by looking out for certain red flags.

Britta Clark, a spokesperson for the BBB shared some tips for how to stay safe. 

“Staying aware of what scams are out there is going to help you avoid them,” she said. 

Clark said that unexpected text messages and emails are a huge red flag, as scam messages are all too common. Never open any links sent to you from unsolicited or unfamiliar emails or phone numbers. 

Lookalike websites are also a threat, according to Clark. These websites are designed to look like Amazon’s, but they aren’t actually Amazon. 

Prime Day payment protection 

Clark also recommended paying with a credit card, or money that can easily be refunded. “Pay with a credit card because it’s easiest to get that money back. You can contest it and it’s a lot easier to see that money returned,” she stated. 

Scammers come out of hiding for Amazon Prime Day, but good judgment can help you protect yourself, added Clark.
