Utah-based credit union named a top five large business employer

SALT LAKE CITY — A new report from USA Today honors Utah-based Mountain America Credit Union as a top-five workplace in the United States.

MACU Chief Human Resources Officer Trent Savage said they were recognized as one of America’s top-five places to work last December.

“A large number of our team members almost 2,000 of our 3,400 employees responded and shared their voice and feedback about how they feel about working here,” Savage said.

“We are the only credit union in the top five and the sole credit union among the 100 large employers.”

The newspaper defined large employers as those with 2500 employees or more.

“Ninety-three percent of our employees vouched for Mountain America’s High ethical standards along with top-tier ratings for (the) benefits we provide.”

How the survey works

According to USA Today, the Top Workplaces Award is an employer recognition program. The outcome is determined by employees who fill out a “research-backed employee engagement survey.”

To be eligible for the program, an organization must employ at least 150 employees. At least 35% of employees need to respond to the survey questions.

Companies that want to participate can be public or private, nonprofit or for-profit, or governmental. 

Connection and development

Savage said the company works hard to make sure their employees feel connected and feel like they’re doing meaningful work.

“We have a very strong intentional focus on taking care of our members,” he said. “We call it the team member blueprint but it’s really about what the environment we expect our managers to create for our team members.”

He says they are also focused on the development of their team members.

“We have a very strong focus on leadership development and on growth and development because as much as possible, we love the culture that we’ve created … we want to make sure we protect that as we grow.

According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, American businesses are dealing with a problem that will only get worse — a labor shortage. Many employers say they can’t find enough workers to fill open jobs. Savage refers to this as a labor gap, and he said his company is keeping his eye on that.

“We recognize that (to) retain our talent and attract talent, we’ve got to be a great place to work, to ensure we have our fair share of the labor that’s available.”

He said they do that by always keeping an eye out for new ways to offer opportunities. 

“We’d love to be number one. We believe we have a great culture and a great place for people to work.”
