SALT LAKE CITY — Utah is the second best state in the nation to work from home, according to a new study by WalletHub.

The study also shows that Utah ranks eleventh in the work environment category and number one in the living environment category.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo said the rankings are based on several factors.

“It runs from the share of workers working from home, internet cost, cybersecurity,” he said, “and even things like how large your house is, how crowded homes are in your state.”

According to Lupo, the reason the size of the home plays a role is because working from a home where there is enough space helps keep people from feeling like they’re cooped up all day.

“Average retail price of electricity, Utah ranks number one overall,” he said. “Internet cost, pretty reasonable, 13th overall. Fourth overall in the median square footage for (the) average number of persons in a household … And number one in the average home’s square footage.”

Lupo said something a lot of people don’t think about when they’re considering a work-from-home location is the cost of electricity, which makes it a plus for Utah since it has (one of the) lowest electricity costs in the country.

Right now, the average residential energy cost in Utah is about $.12 per average kilowatt-hour, according to EnergyBot, a company that tracks electricity rates in real time.

“16% of Utah’s workforce currently work from home, but the projections are that, at some point, 95% could wind up doing their jobs from home in the future,” Lupo said.
