SALT LAKE CITY — When you think of Utah, you wouldn’t be wrong in thinking of our great high school and college football programs, beautiful mountains, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and the Jazz. However, the President of the Black Chamber of Commerce hopes by the end of the All Star weekend, Utah’s strong black business portfolio is added to that list.

Utah’s Black Business’ will be showcased throughout the All Star weekend in what the Black Chamber of Commerce is calling a great opportunity to change the narrative that Utah has no diversity.

According to Dr. Sidni Shorter the president of the Black Chamber of Commerce Utah, the All Star weekend is a massive opportunity for Black businesses across the state.

“We want it number one to not just showcase that we are here, but we are relevant,” Shorter told KSL NewsRadio.

The NBA All Star weekend is expected to see upwards of 120,000 people come to Salt Lake City.

“It really will give us the opportunity with the eyes of the world being upon us to dispel the myth that it is totally white that is totally Mormon, that diverse culture does exist here,” Shorter said.

Furthermore, she told KSL NewsRadio that the NBA has made a great effort to employ the black business of Utah.

“We get the calls at the Chamber asking if we have a member that does this, do you have a member that can provide this, they were shocked at the number of black businesses that showed up,” said Shorter.
