Budget cuts force SLCC Community Writing Center to close just before 25th anniversary

SALT LAKE CITY — Budget cuts are forcing the Salt Lake Community College Community Writing Center to close next summer.

The center, which is run by Salt Lake Community College, was forced to closed after recent legislation required all schools to propose a reinvestment plan to put money towards high-performing programs in order to qualify for state grants.

The center provides writing resources and coaching for the community. It also has specific programs for young people, senior centers, and the Salt Lake County Jail.

Peta Owens-Liston the schools assistant public relations director told Utah radio station KUER they had to look at expenses that were not directly related to student services and that’s what led to closing the writing center.

The CWC is expected to close next summer right before its 25th anniversary.
