SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah is starting an initiative to hold more classes outside of “primetime hours” to help ease congestion on campus.
According to Communications Director Rebecca Walsh, “primetime hours” are the time frame during which most classes are offered, between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
“For many students, it’s hard to get into classes because in some cases, required classes are only offered once a semester or once a year, and if everybody is trying to get into that Tuesday morning class, it means many students may not be able to get into those.”
Walsh said that starting the spring semester, 50% of classes will be held outside those hours, which should provide students with more options when registering for the classes they need.
“Parking would be … hopefully one of the benefits of this, but it would also make it easier to schedule courses,” Walsh said. “It would make it easier to schedule testing. It would make it easier to schedule laboratory courses. The hope is that it would … ease the crowding.”
Some students raised concerns about the changes on social media, so Walsh said the university will hold a Q&A in the near future.
Students can see the new course schedules starting Sept. 22.
