ORDERVILLE, Utah — The Utah Highway Patrol says a head-on collision in southern Utah sent 14 people to the hospital on Thursday.
According to Sgt. Cam Roden, of the Utah Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at milepost 83 on U.S. Highway 89 between Orderville and Mount Carmel Junction.
Roden says a van with 14 occupants was traveling southbound when it crossed over the center line. It collided with a semi that was traveling northbound. A vehicle traveling behind the van rear-ended it as a result of the collision.
Roden also reports that the drivers of the semi and the vehicle behind the van were not injured. However, three passengers in the van were transported by helicopter in critical condition. The 11 others were transported by ground transport to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Roden says the UHP is working to determine why the van crossed into oncoming traffic. He also said the 14 passengers in the van were part of a running group.
Lane closures were reported during the investigation and cleanup of the crash.
