Preliminary results show Utah County wants to split Alpine School District

PROVO, Utah — Preliminary election results show Utah County voters are ready to split the Alpine School District. Alpine is the state’s largest school district.

Saratoga Springs Council Member Chris Carn said if voters approve Propositions 11 and 14, a new school board will be elected in November 2025.

“That new school board essentially takes responsibility of the new school district, which wouldn’t start until July 1 of 2027,” he said.

As the polls opened Tuesday, Alpine School District Director of Communications Dr. Rich Stowell said the district is ready for a change.

“Whether we’re three districts or one district, we will be prepared to make sure that all of the students in Alpine School District are getting excellent education,” Stowell said.

What splitting Alpine would look like

If voters approve, officials will split one school district into three.  If voters approve, the resulting districts would be only the second and third new districts created in Utah in the last century.

Dave & Dujanovic spoke to Alpine school board member Julie King. She said the state implemented debt and resource rules in 2009 after the Canyons School District was created. 

“Allocation of debts and assets is already in code which is great. We don’t have to experience [what] happened in the Jordan/Canyons split,” Kind said.  She was referring to issues involving mediation and asset allocation.”
