SALT LAKE CITY — Just as the month of July arrives, Utah is about to get a whole lot warmer.

Salt Lake City is expected to reach 100 degrees on Monday for the first time this summer. Monica Traphaven, senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service, tells KSL NewsRadio it’s still a little early to be reaching triple digits.

“On average, we see our first 100-degree day around July 7th,” she said. “So, we’ll still be a little bit on the early side. But it feels like it’s, you know, coming a bit later considering the past two years, we’ve seen it happen in early June.”

Traphaven says this could be the beginning of a warming trend for the northern end of the state.

“We’re finally getting to the pattern where we’re getting the low pressure out of the way,” she said. “And we’re going to have, you know, large high-pressure ridge build over the West and then in the Great Basin.”

Utah gets warmer by this weekend

By Saturday, Traphaven says Salt Lake City should hit the 90-degree mark. And then by Monday, it gets even warmer.

“But Monday our forecast is 99 with a 30 to 40 percent chance of us hitting that century mark,” she said.

Traphaven is uncertain of how many 100-degree days Salt Lake City may have in the near future.

“It’s hard to say,” she said. “It depends on how long we stay in this, you know, persistent rich pattern. But the most likely time for us to see those 100s is in July.”

Looking at a three-month outlook, Traphaven says it indicates that Salt Lake City will be in a hotter pattern. During the months of July, August and September, she also says there is a 50% to 60% chance of the temperatures being above average.
