SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake City Police arrested a 16-year-old after he allegedly shot a firearm and ran from police.
According to a press release, police received reports at around 3 a.m. on July 31. They were informed that someone had shot a firearm once and pointed it at several people. This happened in the area of 2000 W. Sir Charles Drive.
Upon arrival, witnesses told officers that the person who shot the firearm was a 16-year-old. Witnesses said he was attending a birthday party and attempted to leave in a car while intoxicated. When partygoers stepped in to stop him, he shot the firearm into the air and pointed it at several people. After this, the suspect left the party.
Through their investigation, officers learned the suspect’s name and the vehicle he was driving.
Gang detectives from Salt Lake City Police were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle, with him inside, at around 3:30 a.m. near 300 S. Cheyenne St.
The suspect then attempted to flee in the vehicle. Following this, he crashed near 1500 W. 400 S. Then, still attempting to get away from police, he attempted to flee the scene on foot. Police caught him a short distance away from the crash.
Upon his arrest, the suspect was taken to an area hospital for general evaluation due to the crash. After this, he was booked into the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center.
According to the press release, he is being charged with two counts of Aggravated Assault, Felony Discharge of a Firearm, Felony Failure to Respond to Officer’s Signal to Stop, Failure to Stop at the Command of a Peace Officer, Possession of a Firearm by a Restricted Person, Possession of Marijuana, and Hit and Run.
Gang detectives recovered what is believed to be the firearm used in the shooting.
