Cat receiving care after suspected fall off 300-foot Bryce Canyon cliff

SALT LAKE CITY — A senior cat is recovering after experiencing a suspected plummet of over 350 feet off a Bryce Canyon cliff.

In a statement, Best Friends Animal Society said it was “contacted by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office” about a tabby cat that was found next to the bodies of a man and a woman in Bryce Canyon Tuesday afternoon.

According to police, it appeared that the two people had fallen off a cliff at Inspiration Point at some point late Monday evening or early Tuesday morning. Wade Mathews with the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office said it was a 380-foot drop.

Best Friends said the cat, whom it named Mirage, was found in a “soft-sided carrier covered in dirt and mud.”

After being found, Mirage was taken to Pawz Dogs, a boarding facility in Panguitch, and then transferred 70 miles to the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab.

At the sanctuary, she received medical treatment. Erin O’Connor with Best Friends said in an email that the cat was “matted and a bit sore, but friendly upon examination.” She was also drinking and eating on her own, and her bloodwork came back normal.

Best Friends estimates Mirage is 12 years old.

O’Connor said medical staff is waiting for X-rays to determine whether she suffered any broken ribs or other injuries.
